Why did south africa embark on its own nuclear weapons program?

It's unlikely it would have used them against its relatively impoverished neighbours and it's geographically far from the hottest zones of the cold war. Simply put: Why? And then as a supplementary, why dismantle them again? Surely a horrific waste of money
