Is threre a difference between front and back splint boots?

I'm using my ex barrel horse for team penning and since he's gettin up there in age I want more support on his legs. I have sport boots and bell boots but I'm wondering if splint boots would be better and if there's s difference between front and back....he twisted his ankle on his back leg last time I during sorting.
